Is Fruit Sugar Bad For You?

Is fruit sugar bad for you? As a holistic nutritionist with 20 years of experience, I can answer this question with full confidence: No, fruit sugar is not bad for you.

If you find yourself afraid to bite into a juicy peach or heavily restricting your daily servings of fruit to "prevent" weight gain, you are operating under false pretenses. This "fruit fear" is often fueled by misleading diet advice.

You have nothing to fear when it comes to eating fresh fruit. I have helped many clients support their weight management goals by not only eating fruit, but by eating a LOT of it.

However, there is something to be aware of when it comes to weight management—and that's processed sugar.

Fruit Sugar Vs. Processed Sugar: How Does Sugar From Fruit Affect Your Body Compared to Refined Sugar?

When it comes to diet culture and weight management, many fear eating fruit. It's not typically the fruit that people are afraid of, but rather the sugar content of the fruit. However, there is a huge difference between the sugar found in fruit sugar and heavily processed table sugar.

Nestled in every piece of fruit are plenty of beneficial nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The abundant nutrients present in fruit are full of health benefits, like supporting cardiovascular health, immune function through high traces of vitamin C, which may contribute to heart health, and supporting your body against free radicals [1]. Yes, there are sugars, too, but natural sugars. These natural sugars metabolize in the body slowly, turning into glucose, giving your body sustained energy without blood sugar spikes.

Now, sucrose, or table sugar, is a different kind of beast. Sugar crystals may look pretty. However, they undergo an ugly, harsh process of heating, treating, and bleaching to look crystallized. These crystallized granules are far from healthy.

Refined sugars are just that—refined. They can often be found on labels written as high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, added sugar, maltodextrin, or anything ending in "ose." These types of sugar have no nutritional value and many negative effects on your overall health. There is not one benefit to eating them. High-sugar diets have actually been linked to various health concerns. Not to mention, refined sugars metabolize in the body much faster, causing dips and rises in blood sugar levels.

The Truth About Limiting Fruit Sugar

Contrary to popular belief, limiting fruit sugar could actually be the reason behind your weight gain.

When you restrict your fruit intake, intense cravings for sugar increase. This is because your body was designed to thrive on the sugars and carbohydrates for energy, both of which are naturally occurring in fruit. Under-eating fresh, sweet fruit is the primary reason why people struggle so much with cravings for sweets and sugar. If you end the day with a craving for something sweet, I can tell you from experience that you did not get enough calories that day from fruit.

And let's be honest: when most people have intense cravings for sweets, they're not reaching for nutritious options, like a slice of watermelon or cold-pressed fruit juice. Often, they're opting for cookies, candy, or ice cream.

Fruit is one of the healthiest food groups for weight management and should be an integral part of any healthy diet. They provide your body with dietary fiber, sustained energy, vitamins, and minerals and are optimal for overall health and well-being.

The Sweet Solution

You don't need crazy supplements or to heavily track the amount of sugar grams you eat. Supporting your wellness goals is much simpler than that.

You need a balanced diet, including lots of whole fruits every day. Eat as many as you'd like without restriction. Yes, you read that right...You can eat as many blueberries or plums as you'd like. You can eat those yummy dried fruits you love (as long as they don't contain added sugars, preservatives, or seed oils). And do so guilt-free.

These are the dietary guidelines that I have given my clients for the last 20 years. And guess what? They've all seen positive changes.

When you stop tracking carbs, counting calories, and limiting healthy foods, you begin to nourish and fuel your body properly, and that is when progress becomes more natural.
