SOY IS NOT HEALTHY.
When I tell people that I’ve gone vegan, an all-too-common response is, “Oh, so… what, you just eat a lot of, like, tofu and stuff?”
...Or I’ll show up to a dinner party and the host greets me with a self-applauding, “Hey, I know you don’t eat meat so I marinated some tofu for you!”
I force a polite grin, “Aw, you shouldn’t have…”
No, but seriously- you shouldn’t have.
Why? Most soy is genetically modified!
If you’re not freaking out about GMO’s, you’re living under a rock. The rates of food-related illnesses and allergies have skyrocketed since GMOs became mainstream. Two of the most common offenders when it comes to adverse food reactions are soy and wheat... both of which are typically genetically modified! I implore you to ignore the Big Business rhetoric that insists that GMOs are safe. There just isn’t legitimate data to substantiate these claims.
...And it messes up your hormones!
Soy also doses you with phytoestrogens, mimicking the body’s natural estrogen. This leads to hormone imbalance in both men and women, a significant cause of infertility (and MALE breast tissue development). Eating soy is literally like taking birth control pills, which might seem like a perk to some people… but don’t be fooled- phytoestrogens are a major cancer trigger!
Scared of soy yet? Wait! There’s more!
- Soy blocks your body’s ability to absorb minerals
- Processed soy is laden with aluminum which causes cognitive problems & dementia
- Eating soy promotes Vitamin B12 & Vitamin D deficiency
- Despite frequent misconception, it’s NOT a complete protein source
- Causes birth defects
- Instigates gastrointestinal issues
- Infant soy formula promotes autoimmune thyroid disease
- Soybean agriculture is awful for the planet
...The list of negatives goes on and on, and, dammit, I don’t have time to write a book right now. I highly suggest being more vigilant of the ingredients in your food. Soy is hiding in more food products than you might think.
So if soy is out, what are some healthy, plant-based sources of protein?
